Shoulder replacement

When nonsurgical options like physical therapy and medication fail to improve chronic shoulder pain, you may need shoulder replacement surgery to relieve pain and restore mobility. During the procedure, an orthopedic surgeon will remove the damaged parts of your shoulder and replace with them artificial components.

Shoulder replacement surgery to restore mobility

When shoulder issues require a joint replacement, we have options.

In Western North Carolina, Mission Health's shoulder surgeons offer joint replacement surgery when nonsurgical methods are unsuccessful. Our leading-edge procedures work to reduce pain, improve range of motion and return you to normalcy quicker.

Disorders treated with shoulder replacement

While the nature of your surgery can vary based on the type and severity of your condition, our experienced surgeons use shoulder replacement surgery to treat a broad range of disorders, including:

  • Chronic joint pain
  • Fall fractures
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Osteonecrosis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Shoulder instability

Shoulder replacement services we offer

We get to know you in order to craft an individualized treatment plan that best fits your condition. Starting with your first exam, we stay with you through both surgery and rehabilitation, following up to help you prevent future fractures.

Types of shoulder replacement surgeries we perform

We always prioritize nonsurgical treatments before surgery. However, if these options have been exhausted and your condition has not improved, shoulder replacement surgery may become necessary.

Our experienced orthopedic surgical teams perform more total shoulder replacements than any other hospital network in Western North Carolina. We work to provide complete, personalized care that reduces your pain and helps you get to the highest levels of function.

Total shoulder replacement surgery

Total shoulder replacement surgery is a procedure that removes damaged cartilage and bones in the shoulder, replacing them with prosthetics. Doing so can result in pain relief and a more natural range of motion, allowing you to return to physical activities. At our hospitals, our expertise in shoulder replacement ensures you achieve the best possible outcome.

Reverse shoulder replacement surgery

We also perform reverse total shoulder replacement, an advanced procedure used to replace damaged tissues of the shoulder. This type of surgery is typically performed if you have undergone previously unsuccessful shoulder surgeries, or have significant rotator cuff tears. In this technique, the deltoid (shoulder) muscle is used to stabilize the shoulder joint, rather than the rotator cuff. Treating the shoulder in this manner can greatly reduce your pain and improve your movement. Accordingly, you may be able to return to an active lifestyle sooner than you think.

Your doctor will discuss each option with you and will recommend the best treatment for your specific needs.

Shoulder replacements for arthritis

There are many ways to treat arthritis in the shoulder, but a shoulder replacement is one of them. This procedure has a much easier recovery than most people expect. It can be done with a small incision and patients can complete most of their therapy at home.
