Cardiac rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation aims to help you recover from a cardiovascular event — such as a heart attack or heart failure — or other debilitating heart condition. This recovery process usually involves physical therapy, exercise and education to rebuild and maintain your heart strength.

Advanced cardiac therapy

We help you take care of your heart so it can take care of you.

In the Mission Health family of hospitals across Western North Carolina, our state- and nationally-certified Heart Path program offers extensive cardiac rehabilitation (rehab) services. Our programs work to strengthen your heart and resilience following cardiac events and surgeries.

Conditions that may require cardiac rehab

Heart therapy is a critical component of any proper recovery plan. Particularly, if you have experienced any of the following conditions or surgical procedures:

  • Balloon angioplasty
  • Chronic heart failure
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Coronary stenting
  • Heart attack
  • Heart or heart-lung transplant
  • Heart valve surgery
  • Stable angina pectoris
  • Stable heart failure

Cardiac rehab services we provide

We work to understand your condition and corresponding risk factors, while designing a personalized care plan to help you avoid future heart problems.

Benefits of cardiac rehab

Our heart therapy program can bring about life-changing results by helping you adopt and sustain lifestyle changes in three primary areas:

  • How you eat
  • How you exercise
  • How you respond to stress

By optimizing these three elements and fully committing to your care plan, we can give you the tools you need to avoid future surgeries, reduce your risk for heart-related events and prevent chronic conditions. All the while, we work collaboratively to empower you to retake control of your health. In our program, our cardiac rehab specialists help you:

  • Decrease the frequency and severity of chest pain
  • Improve your blood pressure
  • Increase your capacity for exercise
  • Lessen your dependence on medications
  • Lose weight
  • Lower your cholesterol

Features of our cardiac rehab program

The structure of our program is designed so that anyone can be successful if they stick with it. We know from experience that once you enroll and get going in the program, you can feel better without feeling the urge to slip back into old habits.

Some of the ways we support you in this journey include:

  • Communication with your physician
  • Education about your personal risk factors
  • Group support and consultations that include loved ones
  • Medically-supervised exercise
  • Personal recovery plan
