Types of weight loss surgery we offer
Weight loss surgery, or, bariatric surgery, should never be taken lightly. It is also not a cure-all. Surgery is just the beginning of your journey, but we are prepared to walk the road with you until you achieve your goals.
Requirements for bariatric surgery
Determining whether you are a suitable candidate for weight loss surgery is determinate on a number of factors. Most importantly, it is based off your body mass index score, or, BMI. If your BMI score is between 35 and 40, that typically indicates that you are between 50 and 80 pounds overweight. In these cases, your chances of long-term weight loss success can be as low as five percent without surgical intervention. With a BMI score above 40, and coupled with one or more obesity-related diseases, such as diabetes, arthritis, sleep apnea, weight loss surgery can be life-changing.
When you work with us, a team of physicians, dieticians, exercise specialists and behavioral specialists will examine your overall wellness, needs and goals to determine what procedure will deliver the most positive outcome. Once complete, our team will develop a postoperative diet and exercise plan that can also be paired with counseling, support groups and education.
We offer several procedures, each of which are performed minimally invasive laparoscopic approaches that result in minimal scarring, shorter hospital stays and faster recoveries.
Gastric sleeve surgery
A gastric sleeve procedure involves one of our bariatric surgeons permanently reducing the size of your stomach. When this is done, it is changed into a smaller, banana-shaped “sleeve” that is able to limit the amount of food you can eat.
Once the procedure has been performed, you can expect to lose 50-to-80 percent of your excess weight within the first six-to-12 months afterwards.
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery
The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure involves our weight loss surgeons closing off part of your stomach to create a small pouch that restricts the amount of food you can eat without feeling full. During surgery, your small intestine is separated into an upper portion and a lower portion, and your surgeon will attach the lower portion to the pouch. This will allow food to pass directly into your small intestine, all while the upper portion is reconnected, supplying fluids to help digest the eaten food.
With this type of aggressive procedure, if you stick with your recommended diet and exercise plan, you can expect to potentially lose 75 percent of your excess weight within 18-to-24 months after surgery.
