At Transylvania Regional Hospital, our transitional care unit (TCU) provides wound care through a variety of treatments, such as advanced topical dressings and negative pressure wound therapy. Our hope is to work together to eliminate your barriers to healing.

Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) testing: This noninvasive tool assesses blood flow to a wound site.
Education about lifestyle choices: Our specialists provide education about the ways in which certain lifestyle choices — such as smoking and having nutritional deficits — can make individuals more prone to sustaining wounds that won't heal.
High-risk nail care services: Our nurses are specially trained to provide nail trimming and foot care, which can prevent wounds from occurring.

Wound management

After evaluating your wound, our skilled specialists may recommend one or a combination of treatments, including:

Advanced topical dressings: Advanced wound dressings include alginate, film, foam, hydrocolloid and hydrogel dressings. They help retain moisture and minimize discomfort.
Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT): This procedure uses a vacuum pump to pull fluid and infection from a wound, helping to speed up the healing process.
Ostomy post-op teaching: This service is offered to help you learn how to manage your ostomy pouch and surgical site.
Total contact casting: Used to heal diabetic foot ulcers, the total contact cast is a specific casting technique that distributes weight along the entire sole of the foot.
Unna boot: An Unna boot is a compression gauze dressing filled with zinc paste that supports the healing of vascular wounds.

Surgical wound care

If your wound requires surgical attention, here are some of the procedures we perform:

Skin grafts: During this surgical procedure, our specialists use healthy skin from one part of your body to replace skin that is damaged or missing.
Skin substitutes: Skin substitutes are a form of wound closure and are used to provide temporary or permanent coverage of open skin wounds. There are natural, synthetic and permanent skin substitutes.
